AS temperatures continue to soar, fire chiefs are urging people to think twice before cooling down in open water.
The bank holiday weekend is expected to be a hot one with locals making the most of the sunshine.
But canals, rivers and lakes can be much colder, which can cause cramps and make it harder to swim.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Ian Read said:
“As the high temperatures coincide with the bank holiday weekend and half term, we are concerned that we may be called to water rescue incidents.
“It’s particularly important for parents to discuss the dangers with their children, particularly teenagers, who may go out with their friends and not appreciate the risks and consequences of cooling off in open water.
“We’d encourage people to visit supervised pools or water play areas instead as they are much safer.
“If you see someone or a pet in trouble in the water, do not try and rescue them yourself, call 999 immediately and where possible use the What3Words app to pinpoint your location.”
