Refugees could only be accommodated in Lichfield and Burntwood if people are taken out of their homes to make way, according to the local UKIP chairman.
A petition has been set up and shared on social media by the Green Party calling on Lichfield District Council to house 10 displaced families.
British Prime Minister David Cameron has agreed that the United Kingdom should resettle 20,000 displaced Syrians by 2020.
But Lichfield and Burntwood UKIP branch chairman Peter Cope believes the PM has caused the refugee crisis by ordering the bombing of Libya in 2011 to topple Muammar Gaddafi’s regime.
He said: “I don’t see how the local authority can offer these people accommodation, as there is no council housing – they would literally have to start taking people out of their homes to do it.
“The problems started when we went into Iraq and removed Saddam Hussein and when Cameron bombed Libya to take out Gaddafi. We remove dictators and then we end up fighting them our whole lives.
“If we had left them in place to sort things out then they would have kept order.
“The only answer is to send our troops to Libya to stop people from getting on the boats.”
The Green Party have called for the UK to take in almost a quarter-of-a-million refugees.
The party’s Lichfield and Burntwood branch spokesman Simon Partridge said politicians of all political persuasions needed to respond with compassion.
“People are not leaving their countries because they don’t like their homes – they are fleeing war and persecution.
“Our response to the crisis has been to call on the Prime Minister to take in more refugees, because we’re a caring party who cares deeply about all people.”
