A NEW lease is set to be agreed on Lichfield City’s ground.
Lichfield District Council’s cabinet will discuss plans for a 125-year deal on the Trade Tyre Community Stadium site at Brownsfield Road.
The lease would be at a “peppercorn rent” as part of a Community Asset Transfer agreement.
A report to the cabinet meeting said:
“Lichfield City Football Club took over the Brownsfield Park site in 2007–2011, inheriting a dilapidated clubhouse, poor-quality pitch and a site affected by vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
“Since then, the club has transformed the area into a thriving, modern community sports and social facility used by over 1,000 local people each week. More than £1million has been invested, supported by over 350 volunteers.”
The club had originally hoped to purchase the freehold for the site.
But the report said a long-term lease was the preferred option.
“Transferring the freehold would significantly reduce Lichfield District Council’s ability to control the further use and operation of the asset.
“A freehold transfer could allow a subsequent future sale without the council’s permission or benefit.
“By transferring the asset on a new 125-yearr full repairing and insuring lease at a peppercorn rental, with the permitted use restricted to a sports and social club for community use or other uses with consent at the Landlord’s sole discretion, will give Lichfield City a virtual freehold with long-term security and full responsibility for all maintenance and repairs, but retain control for Lichfield District Council over future use and any potential disposal.”
The proposals will be discussed at a meeting of the council’s cabinet on 2nd June.
