Lichfield and Burntwood residents are being urged to make sure their old fridges are being disposed of correctly.
The appeal comes after a rise in the number of white goods being illegally dumped across the region.
Lichfield District Council say that more than 25 fridge and freezers have been found since the beginning of August.
And homeowners and businesses are warned that legislation means they could be responsible if their items are illegally dumped.
“We’re concerned by the number of fridges and freezers that have been stripped of their motors and any metal, and then fly-tipped,” said Cllr Louise Flowith. “To help us to keep the district free of litter, please make sure you employ properly licensed companies to take away any bulky waste.
“When hiring a builder, gardener or house clearance company, it’s important to check they are licensed with the Environment Agency to legally remove any unwanted goods. If they are not, don’t use them as you may end up becoming a fly-tipper indirectly, and could be fined up to £5,000.”
