AN event has marked the reopening of squash courts in Hopwas following a refurbishment project.

Lichfield Squash Club joined forces with Tamworth Squash and Racketball Club to mark the occasion.

It saw seven players from each club mixed into teams to play seven matches.

The event also formed part of the international Rally28 World Squash Day campaign, which is bringing together players across the world in the build-up to the sport's Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028.

The £35,000 refurbishment was supported by Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding from Lichfield District Council.

Lichfield Squash Club chairman James Roberts said:

"The courts look absolutely fantastic and it was a brilliant setting for our joint World Squash Day event.

"The whole evening worked really well. Mixing the players into the two global World Squash Day teams gave us some very well-matched games and created a real sense of the two clubs coming together rather than simply competing against each other.

"It was also great to see first-hand how CIL funding has been translated into such a visible improvement to local sporting facilities.

"Lichfield Squash Club has also secured CIL support for the refurbishment of our two courts at King Edward VI School, with that work currently planned for summer 2027, so there is a very positive story developing around investment in squash facilities across the district."
