A LICHFIELD swimmer is preparing to make a splash to raise money for charity.
Sophie Conway, captain at Lichfield Swimming Club, will look to complete 1,000 lengths – equivalent to more than 15-and-a-half miles – on 22nd December.
She decided to embark on the challenge in aid of Young Lives vs Cancer following the death of family friend Raff Marduant, who died aged just ten earlier this year.
Sophie said:
“He was only diagnosed with the cancer five months earlier, but Young Lives Vs Cancer supported Raff and continue to support the family including his brother Bertie and sister Pip.
“I decided it would be fitting to raise money in memory of Raff and to acknowledge the amazing work of Young Lives vs Cancer.
The challenge is expected to take Sophie between eight and nine hours to complete at Friary Grange Leisure Centre.
Sophie said the location of her swim would also be a poignant one.
“The event also coincides with the closing of Friary Grange Leisure Centre’s swimming pool, which has been home of Lichfield Swimming Club since 1968.
“As club captain, I wanted to mark the occasion before the club move to their new pool at Stychbrook Park.”
