FINAL preparations are underway for the Lichfield Proms in Beacon Park.

The evening of music, entertainment and fireworks takes place tomorrow (6th September).

The 26th edition of the city’s proms is still expected to attract thousands of visitors.

It will feature the British Police Symphony Orchestra, who will perform a programme of operetta, famous film scores and traditional proms favourites.

This year’s event will be hosted by well-known local auctioneer Richard Winterton, who takes on the role of compere for the first time.

He said:

“I am honoured and delighted to act as compere for the British Police Symphony Orchestra at Lichfield’s Proms in Beacon Park.

“The proms is such a special fixture in Lichfield District’s calendar as families and friends gather to wave farewell to the summer.

“With a fabulous programme of operetta, famous film scores and sing-along proms favourites, it’s going to be a spectacular evening.

“Danny Mizon’s are huge shoes to step into. He will be missed this year as he recovers from prostate cancer surgery and we all wish him well.”

The free event has proven controversial this year after Lichfield District Council agreed a sponsorship deal with a developer behind plans for a controversial local housing scheme.

Cllr Phil Whitehouse, cabinet member for operational services, parks and waste at Lichfield District Council, said:

“Lichfield Proms in Beacon Park is one of the highlights of our cultural calendar and we’re proud to be delivering it for the 26th year.

“None of this would be possible without the support of all of our sponsors and partners, and we look forward to welcoming thousands of people this weekend for another unforgettable evening in Beacon Park.”

The event starts from 5pm in Beacon Park.
