Lichfield’s Gary Mason admits the death of rider Ben Gautrey has put things in perspective after a disappointing weekend at Cadwell Park.
The MSS Colchester Kawasaki rider narrowly missed out on a top six showdown spot after finishing sixth in race one, 10th in race two and 12 in the final run of the weekend to leave him in eighth place in the British Superbikes Championship.
However, the weekend was overshadowed by tragedy following the death of Kawasaki Superstock 600 rider Gautrey.
The 18-year-old died after suffering serious head and chest injuries in a first lap crash.
And Mason admits his personal disappointment pales into insignificance following the tragedy on the track. He said:
“This weekend has been a nightmare. In qualifying we had engine issues then during the race we suffered from fuelling problems. We needed a slice of luck to get into the top six and we got the opposite. However the sad news about Ben Gautrey puts it all into perspective, my thoughts are with his family and friends.”
