Victory moves Burntwood St Matthews CC into third

Burntwood St. Matthews CC 1st XI moved up to third in the Staffs Division 3A after a 56 run victory over promotion rivals, Beacon CC 3rd XI.

Despite missing several key players, Burntwood were put in to bat and started brightly, with Luke Dovey (70) being the star batsman. He was also well supported by Alex Tsung (33) and Matt Neal (30) as the middle order built up the total.

Valuable late runs were also added by the lower order and tail enders Matt Hoccum (21), Tristan Marsh (12 not out), and 13-year-old Eden Wilkinson (11) as St Matthews ended their batting innings 201 all out.

The pick of the Beacon bowling were Ed Steventon (3-50) and Sanjeev Shukla (3-58).

The Burntwood bowling was largely driven by Alex Tsung’s ruthless spell, as he finished on figures of 6-53. The other star of the attack was Luke Dovey, who contributed 3-48 as Beacon were swept aside for 145 all out.

This fielding performance was made all the more impressive after Burntwood were without captain George Farmer after ten overs of the match.

Burntwood won by 56 runs, as the Saints continue their push for promotion from the Staffs Division 3A.
