Michael Fabricant has urged Lichfield and Burntwood residents to reject what he claims is the anti-aspiration direction of both the Green Party and Labour.
The Conservative candidate admits he is alarmed by the Green Party’s proposal for a 60 per cent income tax rate plan and says Labour will do nothing to help British businesses continue to create jobs.
“I’m worried about the direction this county is potentially going in,” he said. “Both the Greens and Labour want to introduce higher tax rates, which will drive the wealth creators – who provide all of us with jobs – out of the country. These are the very people we need to support our economic recovery.
“In the 1970s under Labour we had a 98 per cent tax rate on people’s savings and you paid 83p in the pound on anything you earned.
“Legendary British actor Michael Caine had a beautiful expression that summed up the difference between the United Kingdom and America. He said a boy and his dad in America were out walking and they saw a nice car drive by. The dad then says to his son ‘if you work hard in life my boy you can buy that car’. In Britain the boy says to his dad ‘look at that beautiful car dad’. The dad replies ‘don’t worry son we will get that rich b****** soon enough’.”
Mr Fabricant also warned Lichfield and Burntwood residents about what he claims would be a “dangerous” SNP-Labour coalition government.
He believes neither party can be trusted in power because both parties have failed to learn the lessons of the financial crash.
The former Tory vice-chairman said: “A SNP-Labour coalition would be incredibly dangerous for this country. The two parties would cause chaos across Britain.
“Labour claims to have learned from the mistakes of the past and that they are now fiscally prudent – but Labour actually wants higher taxes and more borrowing, which is what got us into this mess in the first place, while the SNP support a £150 billion spending spree and no cuts.”
