COUNCIL chiefs have issued a warning after finding workers living illegally in dangerous conditions at several local food businesses.
Environmental health officers say they have uncovered several instances of staff residing in storerooms and offices, with mattresses on floors of overcrowded rooms.
The council said it had taken “swift and robust enforcement action”, including obtaining court warrants and serving emergency prohibition orders.
But the local authority said it would not be naming the businesses involved at this stage due to ongoing investigations.
Cllr Alex Farrell, cabinet member for housing and the Local Plan, said:
“Everyone deserves to live in safe, decent housing. The conditions we’ve seen are unacceptable, with people sleeping in makeshift rooms with no proper facilities and facing serious risks from fire.
“We will not hesitate in seeking to revoke premises licences and prosecute those responsible. If you’re operating a business in Lichfield district, let this be a clear message – these practices have no place in our community.”
