Burntwood St. Matthews moved to within two points of second place in the Staffs Division 3A with a 69 run away win at Old Wulfrunians Tettenhall 3rds.
A strong opening partnership of 92 runs between opening batsmen Luke Dovey (58) and Will Farmer (34), gave Burntwood the ideal start to the match.
This was then followed by a half-century from Matt Crossfield (55), and a commendable 34 runs from George Haywood.
The game then looked as if it might begin to slip from Burntwood’s grasp, as a lower-order collapse risked ruining their positive start with attempts to gain quick runs proving to be in vain.
Peter Harris was the star of the Old Wulfs bowling, with figures of 5-14.
Burntwood regained the initiative with a steady start with the ball – Alex Tsung and George Haywood doing the early damage and finishing with bowling figures of 3-30 and 2-26 respectively.
Matt Crossfield then sealed the victory by mopping up the tail, with impressive figures of 4-17, which moved him on to 50 wickets for the 2011 season.
This win moves Burntwood up to third in the Staffs Club Championship Division 3A, and within touching distance of second place with just five matches of the season remaining.
