Burntwood RUFC aim to end their playing season on a high when they face Wednesbury in the Staffs Intermediate Cup Final at Stafford Rugby Club.

Both sides have lifted the Lewis Taylor Trophy in recent years with Burntwood winning in 2002 and 2006 whilst Wednesbury completed a hat trick of wins between 2003 and 2005.

The final on Sunday (May 9) forms part of Staffs President’s Day and will be preceded by the Owen Cup Final between Linley & Kidsgrove and Uttoxeter which kicks off at 12.30 pm. The battle for the Intermediate Trophy starts at 3pm.

During the interval the awards are made for the Merit Table competitions and Burntwood already know they will leave Stafford with at least one trophy with the 3rds having clinched top place in Merit Table C South.

The final should be an interesting clash of playing styles. Although Burntwod completed a league double over their opponents, Wednesbury are back to full strength and will be a tough nut to crack. They have beaten M3WN league winners Leek and Handsworth to get to the final, Burntwood have seen off Bloxwich and previous holders Tamworth.

However, Graham Shelley’s side also has everyone available and have had two weeks to get their preparations right.

The club hope to have a large following behind them to give them the edge in what should be a close contest.
