Lichfield residents fighting plans for a new housing development in their village have turned out in force to voice their opposition to the scheme.
More than 100 people joined campaigners from Streethay Against Development (SAD) at a public exhibition by Miller Homes at St Michael’s Church Hall.
The Foden Park scheme – on land off Burton Road – would see 850 new homes built, along with a leisure centre and primary school.
The plan has further angered local campaigners who have criticised the way new housing targets have been allocated to their area.
Roger Manning, chairman of SAD, said:
“We have submitted detailed valid objections to what Miller Homes is proposing. The councillors who put us in this situation would like us to think it was a fair and equitable process and decision. They clearly sought the decision that would alienate the least number of voters.
“A less than subtle approach is developing, which, through discreet planning, will drive contentious development towards Trent Valley and Streethay. The development of Lichfield Park in Burton Old Road, and industry and retail outlets in Eastern Avenue, is a clear indication that we are the soft option for dumping what the city does not want.
“As this becomes more clear, so does the complete lack of existing infrastructure and the potential for developing it. It would be a disaster that will blight our area and take decades to remedy. This policy is effectively destroying the 14th century village and much needed excellent farming land.”
