Work will start on Monday (July 8), meaning the pool and changing facilities will be out of action until the autumn, although the rest of the leisure centre will remain open.

Councillor Val Richards said “We’re all excited that work is about to get started on the makeover as it will make a huge difference to leisure centre users.

“We know everyone will miss the swimming pool over the summer and autumn, but we hope swimmers will take advantage of Burntwood Leisure Centre’s two pools while it is out of action.”

“Everyone that has a membership to Friary Grange Leisure Centre, which includes use of the pool, is being offered access to Burntwood’s facilities throughout the works, as part of their membership.”

The £500,000 project is funded by Sport England, Aiming High, Staffordshire County Council, Lichfield District Council and section 106 contributions.

Charles Johnston, from Sport England, said: “With three quarters of people citing the quality of the changing rooms as being important to their sporting experience, our investment to improve facilities is vital if we are to get more people playing sport.

“The funding to improve the swimming pool changing rooms at Friary Grange Leisure Centre will have a big impact on sport in the local community.”
