A COUNCILLOR has branded the lack of a signal-controlled crossing at a Burntwood development as "unacceptable".

A planning application for the Blue Hoardings site off Milestone Way was approved by Lichfield District Council in September.

But Cllr Robin Hall, Reform UK representative for Burntwood South at Staffordshire County Council, said an officer's planning report had not considered concerns about safe cycle and pedestrian access.

He said:

"I want to see this site developed and investment coming into Burntwood, but residents must be able to get there safely.

"When the developer questioned the need for a signal-controlled crossing, I asked our senior highways team to review it. They reconsidered the evidence and confirmed that it was necessary for safety and accessibility.

"Having sought that review, I take its findings seriously. It is unacceptable to proceed without securing the recommended crossing unless there is a convincing explanation of how those safety concerns will be addressed."

Cllr Hall said the highways assessment identified shortcomings in nearby crossing points and the need for a safe, convenient connection for pedestrians, wheelchair users and cyclists.

But the Lichfield District Council planning officer's report concludes that a signal-controlled toucan crossing is not needed.

An alternative pedestrian crossing is proposed, with its detailed design still to be agreed.

Cllr Hall added:

"The issue is whether the proposed alternative provides the protection that highways officers say is needed. Residents deserve a clear answer. I have pushed back and escalated my concerns within Staffordshire County Council.

"Bringing this long-vacant site back into use is important, and safe access should be part of getting it right."
