PLANS have been unveiled to convert a residential annex in Burntwood into a saddlery workshop.

The application for 14 Princess Street has been submitted to Lichfield District Council.

A planning statement said:

"The proposal is intended to provide an appropriate working environment for an established specialist saddlery business undertaking the hand manufacture of bespoke equestrian saddles and associated accessories, including girths and stirrup leathers, together with repairs and alterations to existing saddles.

"The production process is inherently small-scale and labour-intensive. Each saddle is individually handmade and production is limited to approximately four saddles per month.

"The business therefore has very different operational characteristics from a conventional manufacturing or industrial workshop.

"The existing annexe provides sufficient accommodation for the workshop and associated storage requirements without the need to construct a new commercial building. Its reuse therefore represents an efficient and proportionate response to the needs of the business.

"The proposal would also support the continued operation of a specialist local enterprise and associated employment while retaining activity at a scale that is compatible with the surrounding residential environment."
