Jigsaw closure would be devastating, warns Lichfield City Councillor

A Lichfield City Councillor has said closure of the Jigsaw community hub would be “devastating”.

The Dimbles venue could shut as part of a £1.7million programme of cuts likely to affect a number of services.

Lichfield District Council is proposing the savings after conducting its Fit for the Future review.

The local authority’s Cabinet has already done a U-Turn on plans to close the community transport department, but the community services budget still looks likely to be slashed.

But in a joint statement, City Councillor Marion Bland and Liberal Democrat colleague Paul Ray said such a decision would impact on “vital” work.

They said: “When we read the proposals from Lichfield District Council on community funding – and in particular the threat to the Jigsaw hub in Dimbles Lane – we were dismayed.

“If these cuts to the budget go ahead, then this will have a severe impact on the lives of the residents, not just of Chadsmead where the Jigsaw hub is based, but the whole of north Lichfield.

“The Jigsaw hub carries out several vital functions, including for those seeking employment in our city and needing a loan or credit through Fusion Credit Union and it would be a devastating loss of amenity if this were to close.

“We support the other campaigns to save the hub and really hope that all the above aspects will be taken into consideration by the District Council in their deliberations.”

I agree with Councillor Bland and Mr. Ray. Jigsaw is needed by residents in the North of the city. They organised good events for the kids, too.

I was not aware of the Jigsaw community hub, or what it does, particularly the following statement by the councillors:-

“The Jigsaw hub carries out several vital functions, including for those seeking employment in our city and needing a loan or credit through Fusion Credit Union and it would be a devastating loss of amenity if this were to close.”

I fall into the category of somebody seeking employment and wanting to start a business in Lichfield. I have looked into numerous avenues for starting a business and funding it, but have never come across “Jigsaw”.
I have since found the Fusion Credit Union and fail to see why I would need to use the Jigsaw service to apply for the loan if needed. Which begs the question about how effective this is, unless it is promoted more widely within the community it serves, it is a costly embellishment, which could be funding a more dynamic, pro-active service.
