The Hospital Road playing fields have been earmarked for a community asset transfer.

The Cabinet at Lichfield District Council backed the proposals for Burntwood Dragons to take over the site at a meeting last night.

The club – which operates a range of junior sides as well as the female teams from Burntwood Phoenix – will take on a long term lease if the project is given final approval by the full council.

“It’s been months of hard work and we still have some little bits and pieces of work to do before we take over,” a spokesperson for the club said.

“But Burntwood Dragons and Burntwood Phoenix will finally have a place to call home.”

The move has also been welcomed by Cllr Doug Pullen, Conservative member for Hammerwich with Wall on Lichfield District Council.

“These proposals safeguard the public enjoyment of the playing fields for our local residents, including the pavilion and the play area, while reducing the overall cost to both the Parish and District Councils,” said Cllr Pullen, who is also a member of Hammerwich Parish Council.

“The fact that the proposed tenant works so closely with many different age groups, both boys and girls, is really positive for the local area.”
