Bore Street-based Salloways will close for good later this year after owner Nigel Salloway made the decision to retire.

He is the fourth generation of the family to run the business since it was established in 1871 by clockmaker John Salloway.

When the original owner died in 1900 the company was left to his brother William and wife Harriet, before decorated war veteran Frank Salloway took over in 1922.

The mantle was eventually passed on to his son John, who travelled the world with his wife Mary as an expert in gemmology.

Current owner Nigel – John’s son – joined the business full time in 1989.

“I was brought up with the business and I worked alongside my father and mother for over 35 years,” Nigel said. “We made so many friends – valued customers who have come to us over generations. I will really miss those interactions.

“My mother and father instilled in me, their passion for the business. If it was ever quiet in the shop, my father would get one of the rare gemstones out of his collection and quiz us about what it was.

“Even after his retirement, every day my father would come into the store and find out what we had sold. Jewellery was his life.”

Nigel said the decision to shut up shop had not been an easy one.

“It’s been a tough conclusion to draw,” he said.

“Salloways has been part of my life, man and boy. It’s going to be a very sad day when we finally close the doors.

“We are looking forward to welcoming customers old and new to the closing down sale and offering the people of Lichfield a final opportunity to purchase a beautiful piece of jewellery from us.”

To mark the closure a 50% off sale will start at 10am on 1st December, with jewellery including diamond rings, coloured stone pieces, bracelets, necklaces and earrings on offer.

I was hoping to visit Salloways before Christmas, ideally to purchase a high class ladies automatic watch, is it worth taking the time to visit your shop. i have bought two new high value watches off you fairly recently.

Please respond ASAP as time is now running out before Christmas is here.

Thank you

Peter, this is a news site. You’d be better off contacting Salloways directly :)
