LICHFIELD’S MP has called for strong action to track down and prosecute those behind a huge fly-tipping incident in Lichfield.

The mound of rubbish was dumped on Watery Lane this morning (20th January), blocking access to businesses and residential properties.

Clean-up crews are expected to start work on removing the waste tomorrow morning.

Lichfield MP Dave Robertson says he has been in touch with both Staffordshire Police and Lichfield District Council to ask what action they are taking to find the perpetrators. a

He said:

“This fly-tipping completely unacceptable.

“I went up there just after 9am this morning and I’ve also spoken to the chief executive of Lichfield District Council.

“It’s really important that emergency services and local residents are able to access the road, and businesses are able to open again.

“I have written to Staffordshire Police and Lichfield District Council to ensure that this incident is investigated and action is taken against the perpetrators.

“It’s unacceptable that across the country just one in 500 fly-tipping incidents result in a prosecution.

“The public rightly expects that people who abuse our road network and endanger the environment in this way, with the serious effects it has on people’s livelihoods, should be brought to justice with significant fines levied and custodial sentences considered if appropriate.”

Anyone with information on fly-tipping can report it to Lichfield District Council
