A Burntwood councillor has welcomed the appointment of an older people’s champion by Lichfield District Council.
Labour’s Sue Woodward had put herself forward for the position, but the Conservative administration appointed Cllr Ian Pritchard to the post.
However, Cllr Woodward admitted she was not disappointed by the decision.
“I believe that this commitment by the Council is very timely and welcome to many of our residents, older people and their younger relatives and friends,” she said. “I didn’t expect the council to take up my offer to be the champion but I’m delighted that they have taken up my suggestion.
“I have promised to work closely with Cllr Pritchard in his role so that, together across both political parties at the council, we can all help to improve the lives of our older residents.”
Lichfield district has a higher than average number of older people and numbers are projected to grow significantly over the next ten years.
“There is no doubt that we need to have the right housing and housing support for our older people here in Lichfield District,” added Cllr Woodward. “But we can do much more too by promoting healthy lifestyles, leisure opportunities and community support.
“The Labour councillors are committed to this and I hope we will be joined by all of our fellow councillors.”
