Burntwood residents are being urged to sign a petition against cuts by Lichfield District Council.
A campaign against the reduction and removal of some community services has been launched by Labour opposition group leader, Cllr Steve Norman.
The savings have been earmarked as part of the local authority’s £1.7million Fit for the Future review.
And local residents will be able to add their name to the petition when the Burntwood Labour councillors hold advice surgeries from 10am to 11am on Saturday (July 6) at Burntwood Library.
“With just days left to go before the crucial vote on part of the £1.7 million worth of cuts before the Council meeting on July 9 it is important that all those residents who believe they will be affected by the proposed cuts in community transport, community partnerships and the Old Mining College Centre sign the petition urging the Conservative leaders to think again,” said Cllr Norman.
“We will have copies of the petition at our surgeries as well as being on hand to answer any questions residents may have about the drastic cuts in government funding that will affect everyone in the district to some degree.”
Councillor Norman added that he was “very disappointed” that the district’s MPs had remained silent on the cuts – which have been blamed on a reduction in funding from Government – saying that they had left their Conservative councillors to deal with the anger of voters.
“We do have to balance the books on the council,” Cllr Norman admitted. “But the people who benefit most from community transport and the expertise of our community partnerships staff are the very people that need our help the most.
“Older and disabled people who rely on the community transport to get to the social clubs would be socially isolated if it came to an end.”
