PEOPLE and organisations across Staffordshire are being invited to share a message of support for those struggling over the festive period.
Staffordshire County Council have partnered with the Samaritans to light windows and buildings green on Sunday (21st December) to mark the longest night of the year.
The campaign aims to remind people that help is always available, even on Christmas Day.
Locations already confirmed to be taking part include a number of county council buildings and the National Memorial Arboretum.
Cllr Martin Rogerson, cabinet member for health and care at Staffordshire County Council, said:
“While the holidays are a happy time for many people, there are those who struggle during the Christmas period. That is why campaigns like this one, letting everyone know that they have someone they can talk to if they feel isolated, is so important.
“I am hugely encouraged by the support this campaign has already received. I urge everyone to visit their local library, collect their free poster and green tealight and shine a light through their window on the longest night.
“Let’s all share the crucial message that no one has to face this season alone.”
Damon Preece, Samaritans regional officer, said:
“We recognise Christmas and New Year can be a time of expectations and people can feel pressured into joining in or appearing happy when that isn’t the case.
“Samaritans’ volunteers provide a non-judgemental ear so people can share what’s on their mind and hopefully work through the difficulties they are facing.
“Anyone can call Samaritans on 116 123, which is a free call and won’t show on your phone bill. You can even call us without credit.
“Our volunteers are there to listen not only through the festivities, but throughout the year.”
