A county councillor admitted the Government’s decision to give Hs2 the go-ahead wasn’t unexpected.
However, Matthew Ellis – who represents the Lichfield Rural East constituency – said the announcement was still an “unwelcome” one.
Transport Secretary Justine Greening gave the high speed rail project the green light yesterday (January 10) after months of campagining from both sides of the debate.
However, with a choice on the £32billion project finally being made, Cllr Ellis admitted he was concerned by the “risky” decision.
“The announcement by the Secretary of State for Transport isn’t, to be fair, unexpected but is unwelcome,” he wrote on his blog.
“And not just because it would rip a swathe through some of the most fabulous countryside in Staffordshire but also because from a cold assessment of the business case it’s massively risky.
“I don’t agree with HS2 and see it as a black mark against what is, in the main, an effective time in office nationally for the Governemnt trying to set the foundations that will be better for the UK in the future.”
