Councillors are set to discuss the impact of a new high speed rail line that could cut through parts of Lichfield and the surrounding area.
HS2 will be debated by Staffordshire County Council at a meeting tomorrow (March 17) which is due to be broadcast live on the internet.
The views aired at the meeting will form part of a report being prepared by the authority into the proposals.
County council leader Philip Atkins said:
“The HS2 debate is a vital one for Staffordshire. HS2 will have considerable implications for Staffordshire – for our environment and economy. Much of the detail of the proposals is not yet known to us, but the currently proposed line would terminate in Staffordshire and any further development would cut though the Staffordshire countryside if approved.
“If approved, HS2 would also have implications on existing rail services in Staffordshire. The debate will help us to formulate a formal response in the summer.”
A public consultation on the proposed route between London and Birmingham started on February 28 and runs until July.
Tomorrow’s meeting can be viewed via the Staffordshire County Council website from 10am.
