STAFFORDSHIRE County Council has renewed its commitment to delivering the long-awaited health centre in Burntwood by Autumn 2028, a meeting has been told.
It is also expected that the plans, which were recently consulted on, will be submitted in the summer.
Indicative proposals have outlined the proposal, which, while still being finalised, is set to feature consulting rooms, treatment facilities and a substantial waiting area.
The former Burntwood Youth Centre site is also being transformed to accommodate a care home alongside land designated for three sports pitches.
Concerns regarding the potential loss of funding from Lichfield District Council have previously been expressed.
In October 2025, Cllr Rob Strachan, cabinet member for finance and Commissioning, cautioned that £1.15million in Community Infrastructure Levy Funding might be redirected to alternative district council projects unless those in charge of the initiative began to "get on with it".
The consultation for the new healthcare centre, which ended earlier this month, detailed how it was hoped that construction would start in February 2027, following 16 years of talks.
Cllr Robin Hall, county council cabinet member for economy and skills, told councillors that residents had waited long enough for the new centre.
He said:
"Let’s not pretend the health centre issue is new – it’s been talked about for 16 years.
"When I took this on there was no plan, no momentum and practically no handover at all for such a big project.
"I made it my priority on day one. Now we've got momentum, we’ve got plans, consultations are being done and it’s about to go to planning.
"The people of Burntwood are right – they’ve waited long enough."
