News that an independent review of the HS2 scheme is to be carried out has been welcomed by the leader of Staffordshire County Council.
The Government’s Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced the entire scheme would be re-assessed, with the findings expected to be ready by the Autumn.
The review of the controversial high speed rail scheme – which will cut through parts of Lichfield and surrounding villages – will consider the benefits and impact of the project, as well as the affordability of the route.
Cllr Philip Atkins, leader of Staffordshire Council, said: “While this is a decision for Parliament, from the outset we have made it clear that we will do everything we can to mitigate its impact, win timely compensation for affected communities and ensure we share in improved connectivity and economic benefits.
“While our position on HS2 remains unchanged, we welcome this independent review of the impact, affordability and scope of the project and look forward to examining the detail of the findings in the autumn.”
The report will inform the Government’s decisions on next steps for the project. Limited, largely preparatory works, on the project will continue in parallel with the report’s work.
The county council has already called for a halt on these works until the full scope of the project is confirmed.
