The leader of Burntwood Town Council has admitted that the area is “overdue a bit of lobbying” over healthcare provision.

Residents have seen plans for a new healthcare centre at Greenwood House stall, while the current health and wellbeing centre at Burntwood Leisure Centre is not likely to be replaced.

New town council leader, Cllr Helen Fisher, said she was committed to making strong representations on the issue.

“We are overdue a bit of lobbying on this,” she said. “I will get together with the opposition and draft something so we can lobby the relevant bodies.”

Cllr Fisher’s comments came after Labour opposition group leader Cllr Diane Evans called for action.

“There has been no progress on the issue of healthcare – and this isn’t just about Greenwood House,” Cllr Evans said.

“There needs to be a commitment to adequate healthcare provision, as it is sadly lacking in Burntwood.

“I hope we will get assurances on this.”

Cllr Alan White, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet member for health, has previously warned that budget constraints meant a new heatlh centre may not be on the agenda for some time.

“I don’t dispute the need for a new health centre, but the money is not there.

“I am regularly having conversations with NHS England about Burntwood and have reminded them about their obligations to the people of the town.”
