Plans have been unveiled for two new cabinet roles on Lichfield District Council.
Six representatives had previously made up the senior group of the Conservative-controlled authority.
But leader, Cllr Mike Wilcox, said the reduction in the overall number of councillors meant changes were needed.
“We know only too well that there will be challenges over the next four years,” he explained. “It is my job as leader to make sure we are alert to challenge and change.
“We need to make sure that this council is ahead of the game.
“Because of this we have to recognise that many members of this authority have full time careers.
“As a result we are creating two new cabinet positions to enable those in full-time paid employment to put themselves in a position to be considered for a senior role.”
But Labour opposition leader Eric Drinkwater said the money for the new positions could have been used elsewhere.
“Surely the money would have been better spent on staff hours rather than extra cabinet posts?”
