Les Ballets Trockadero De Monte Carlo will be making a welcome returning to Birmingham Hippodrome on March 30 delighting the army of discerning fans they have built up over the years. They’ve been going for yonks but somehow they’re still kind of a well-kept secret known only to dance fanatics and connoisseurs of comedy chic, and the fact that they tour internationally means their visits to these shores are widely anticipated with real relish and enthusiasm.
I caught them on their last visit and was stunned, delighted, amused and at times simply awed by their versatility, their incredible technique and the sheer Rolls Royce finish of everything about their performances, the costumes, the choice of repertoire, the lot. And this was all the more amazing because the Trocs, as they’re affectionately known, are all men – men in tights, men in frocks, let’s face it, it’s drag, but oh, so superior to the bog standard foulmouthed docker in a frock of popular bad taste. Because the Trocs are superb artists, who to be frank although they are men play the women’s roles even better than many accomplished ballerinas.
Don’t just take my word for it – the night I saw them the theatre was packed not only with fans and ballet aficionados but with dancers, choreographers and prominent ballet critics. One expert agreed with me – they really were better in many cases than quite “legit” ensembles, and in addition they’re just so funny. One set piece involving four prima ballerinas assolutas all trying to upstage each other was the quintessence of style, comedy and performance magic.
If you want a treat that’s a little bit out of the ordinary with style and good humour, then this one is for you. I’ll definitely be rushing to the Hip to see them, so see you there.
