A LARGE deer dubbed "the King of Chasewater" has died.
The Monarch Red stag, known locally as Bruce, was a favourite of local photographers, who often captured images of him with items stuck in his antlers.
The animal had ruled the deer population at Norton Bog for a number of years.
He died after getting into trouble in the water.
Cllr Hayley Coles, Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Communities Hayley Coles said:
"Bruce was certainly a great attraction at Chasewater and instantly recognisable to local people.
"I know he brought people a lot of joy, especially on social media where people were forever posting photographs of him out and about. He was also really popular amongst our rangers too."
Andrew Marlow, a local photographer, took many pictures of Bruce over the years.
He said:
"Years ago I knew nothing at all about the local red deer populations. I had just heard rumours that they existed in the area.
"Over the course of time I discovered where I could find some locally, and eventually came across the herd that frequent Chasewater.
"I watched as Bruce became the dominant stag, eventually bringing in crowds of people just to see him.
"He became not only the most incredible visible spectacle, but also the soundtrack of Autumn with his voice booming out across the heaths.
"Bruce became without a doubt he most well-known local stag ever. A true local icon.
"Bruce did not win every battle, but he did win the hearts of everyone that set eyes on him. He truly was the King of Chasewater and he will be sadly missed."
