NEW choristers have been formally welcomed in a ceremony at Lichfield Cathedral.

Four boys, two girls and four choral scholars joined the Cathedral Choir as part of the event, while seven existing members were recognised with positions of responsibility in acknowledgement of their dedication and progress.

Under the direction of Director of Music Ben Lamb, choristers receive a musical education alongside opportunities to "develop confidence, discipline, teamwork and lifelong friendships".

Ben said:

"Singing in the Cathedral Choir quickly becomes part of the fabric of life, and we are delighted to welcome our newest choristers and scholars into the choir community.

"Watching young people develop not only as musicians but also as individuals is one of the great privileges of this role."

Sue Hannam, headteacher at Lichfield Cathedral School, said:

"I am constantly inspired by our choristers. Their dedication to music, learning and one another is exemplary.

"The unique partnership between school and cathedral creates an environment in which choristers can excel academically while experiencing the joy and discipline of world-class choral music.

"It is an education that is rich in opportunity, rich in character and, above all, deeply enriching for every child who takes part."

The Cathedral is currently recruiting new choristers in Years 3, 4 and 5.

A Be a Chorister for a Day event will also take place on 16th January 2027, giving children and their families the chance to learn more about the role and the choral scholarship programme.
