The impact of ward boundary changes at district level are set to be discussed by Lichfield City Council.
The Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) has recommended a reduction in the number of councillors at Lichfield District Council.
A decision has yet to be reached on the new make-up of the wards, but Lichfield City Council has admitted changes are likely to have an impact at their level too.
City councillors will meet on Tuesday (January 21) to discuss how revised district ward boundaries could lead to a reshuffle.
In a document ahead of the meeting, Town Clerk Peter Young said that there are likely to be 15 District Councillors covering the Lichfield City area – meaning it will be “almost inevitable” that there will need to be changes to ward boundaries.
“This will have implications for this council as the City Council wards have to be wholly within District wards,” he said. “So the City Council wards will almost certainly change for the 2015 elections too.
“In such circumstances the LGBCE is likely to propose redistributing the current 28 City Council members between the new city wards, but (unlike for District) it does not have to achieve electoral equality in parish wards when doing so.
“Again, purely mathematically, it is unlikely that 28 members will achieve the best electoral balance within a new warding structure, in which case the City Council may wish to make representations for an alternative overall number of City members, in order to achieve a better electoral balance.”
The City Council meeting takes place at 6.30pm in the Guildhall on Tuesday.
