Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant has called for a cut in duty on beer to help support local pubs.
Mr Fabricant’s comments appeared in a Birmingham Post article on the demise of traditional British boozers.
A leading think-tank has blamed unfair taxes and cut-price supermarket drinks for the problems facing the industry.
And now Mr Fabricant has called for Treasury Ministers to rethink the tax and has written to the Conservative Shadow Chancellor George Osborne to call for lower taxation on beer with the duty reclaimed through a rise in tax on spirits.
He told the Birmingham Post why he felt the measure was needed:
“This would help pubs and I have noticed that the closure of pubs in Lichfield is altering the character of the street scene in the city.”
