LICHFIELD’S MP says he is pleased commuters returning to train travel after the Christmas and New Year break will not face higher fares.
The Government has confirmed rail ticket fares on the Cross City Line will be among those frozen at 2025 levels.
Labour MP Dave Robertson said holding the price would be welcome by those using local stations including Lichfield Trent Valley, Lichfield City and Shenstone.
He added:
“The Government is attacking the cost of living, and the fares freeze – the first time there’s been no rise for 30 years – means making travel by rail more affordable.
“It’s one of a package of measures to invest in rail that’ll benefit our area, including the Midlands Rail Hub that’ll increase capacity across the Midlands and, in time, bring back four trains an hour between Lichfield and Birmingham.”
The Labour MP said he intended to continue pressing for further improvements for local passengers, including the opening of a new station at Alrewas.
“I want to see a later evening train from Birmingham to Lichfield to allow people from our area to have a night out and travel home by train, I want to see the fastest possible progress towards a return to four trains an hour to Birmingham, and I want to see progress on reopening Alrewas station.
“I’ll fight for the best deal for commuters and travellers in Lichfield, Burntwood and the villages – and freezing fares is just one step in the right direction.”
