Lichfield’s MP says the wait for Brexit has been “way too long”.
Michael Fabricant’s comments come after it was confirmed Parliament would be suspended in September.
Some have seen the move as a ploy to prevent MPs blocking a no-deal Brexit by reducing the time available.
But Conservative MP Mr Fabricant said any lost days were dwarfed by those which have currently passed without any breakthrough on the issue of leaving the European Union.
“If Parliament is prorogued on 10th September, returning on 14th October for the State Opening of Parliament, it will be just three days longer than usual as there always is a conference recess in September for three weeks,” he said.
“This does beg the question of what Parliament would have done in those ‘missing’ three days that it could not do in the last three years?
“We have had the longest Parliament in 400 years so a State Opening is now long overdue.”
“Only the EU can amend the deal”
Mr Fabricant said any prospect of a deal on Brexit would rely on a change in stance from the EU.
“Parliament voted to empower the British people in a referendum and then voted with a majority of over 320 to trigger Brexit by applying Article 50,” he said. “Since then, three times Parliament rejected the deal.
“The only motion Parliament did agree upon was that it would approve the deal if the Irish back-stop clause were removed.
“That is for the EU now to decide upon. Only they can amend the deal.
“I believe that the democratic will of the British expressed in 2016, as empowered by Parliament, must now be enacted – with or without Theresa May’s amended deal.
“After three long years, the wait has been far too long.”
