John Pucci bagged a brace as Burntwood produced their best performance of the season to date.
The hosts welcomed a spirited Wolverhampton to the Sportsway and both teams played their part in this captivating encounter.
The home team drew first blood when full-back Pucci went over for the games first try after a sweeping move by the Burntwood midfield. But Anthony Morgan was unsuccessful with the conversion attempt.
Wolverhampton were never out of this game and responded immediately with a penalty kick after Burntwood had gone offside at a ruck.
The game was opening up with the defence of both teams being fully tested. It was however, the hosts who managed to finally break down the Wolverhampton resistance when Luke Rookyard turned defence into attack and, with the ball passing through no less than 20 pairs of hands, Pucci crashed over for his second score just on the half-time whistle. Morgan successfully landed the conversion.
The second half was again a very tight affair with both sides scoring a try. Ben Poulton, who was having a fine game at Number 8, went on a barn-storming run eventually crashing over as Wolverhampton’s big hitting defence failed to stop him. Nigel Smith duly added the extras.
With Burntwood making six changes in the last 20 minutes, it was Wolverhampton who had the final say in this enthralling fixture, scoring a fine try just before the referee blew for full-time.
