Burntwood RUFC Veterans suffered their first loss in over two years after a dubious last minute try awarded to Nottingham Moderns by the home side referee condemned them to a 19-17 defeat.
Moderns, who were unable to field a front row, elected to play uncontested scrums, which contributed to the game not being played in the way Burntwood had wished.
The sides exchanged two converted tries apiece in the first half. The Burntwood tries came from Mark Willson and Rob England, both converted by Craig Addy which meant the game was evenly poised at 14 points all at the break.
Midway through the second half Addy stroked home a penalty kick to give the men from The Sportsway a slender lead which lasted until the very last play of the game when the Nottingham forwards drove for the line and the referee awarding the try as he deemed the ball had been grounded under the mass of bodies.
