A new conservation group aiming to encourage more wildlife around Lichfield is looking for volunteers.
The new Countryside and Parks Conservation Group (CPCG) aims to play a key part in maintaining and conserving the district’s parks, open spaces and protected habitats. Activities will include hedge laying, pond building, clearing scrub and building homes for local wildlife.
Councillor Val Richards said:
“We’re looking for volunteers to join the group and help manage our precious natural habitats. We hope they will help us to maintain our parks and protected sites at conservation events throughout the year. This is a great opportunity for anyone who treasures their local wildlife and wants to learn essential skills to conserve these important sites for years to come.”
The next CPCG event will take place on March 2, from 10.30am to 3pm at Ironstone Road Heathland. Volunteers will spend the day clearing heather and creating habitat piles.
Cllr Neil Roberts added:
“Heathland is a globally important environment that is disappearing at a frightening rate. Spend a day amongst the heather, clearing the small trees and scrub and creating habitat piles to help insure the survival of the heath and improve the site for animals and plants. Don’t forget to wear sturdy shoes, bring some thick gardening gloves, and to wrap up warm.”
No skills are needed and the volunteers will be given full training. Volunteers must be over 18 years of age.
