Thousands of bulbs will be planted near Lichfield as part of a new ‘living’ memorial.
A carpet of crocuses will be grown along Yeomanry Avenue at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas.
The first planting session took place in September, with thousands more bulbs set to added on Saturday and Sunday (November 2 and 3).
Sarah Montgomery, managing director of the Arboretum, said: “We are very grateful to those visitors and supporters who have already helped us to plant bulbs to create the carpet of crocuses, which will be a beautiful reminder of hope and renewal as it bursts into life each spring.
“All are welcome to come along and help with the second bulb planting weeken.”
The first bulbs were planted by Robert and Christina Wornham as a tribute to their son Jeff, a firefighter who died in 2005 as he tried to rescue a young woman from a fire in a block of flats.
“Planting our bulbs at this very special place is a way for us to keep Jeff’s memory alive”, explained Robert. “We won’t ever grow tired of visiting. We feel it brings our family together again.”
Supporters of the Arboretum, part of The Royal British Legion family of charities, are being encouraged to make a donation towards the cost of the bulbs which can be planted in memory of a loved one or for all those who have lost their lives. Donations can be made online.
