AN Olympic champion cyclist is being granted the Freedom of the City of Lichfield.
Sophie Capewell will become the first recipient of the honour since 2016.
The cyclist was part of the Team GB women’s sprint trio who claimed gold on the track in Paris in 2024.
Lichfield City Council has decided to formally honour the local cyclist’s achievements after the proposal received unanimous backing from councillors.
Cllr Rosie Harvey‑Coggins, Deputy Mayor of Lichfield, said:
“I am delighted that the council has agreed to grant Sophie Capewell the Freedom of the City.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to shine a light on women in sport and the incredible achievements they bring to our communities.
“Sophie is a fantastic example to residents across Lichfield, and we are immensely proud of everything she has accomplished.”
The official ceremony is expected to take place later this year.
