A NEW outdoor chess table has been installed at Burntwood Leisure Centre.
The project was supported by Cllr Darren Ennis and Cllr Laura Ennis through the Lichfield District Council funding for members.
The free to use facility was installed by Concrete Sports.
The first game played on the table was between Cllr Darren Ennis and Cllr Phil Whitehouse, cabinet member at Lichfield District Council.
Cllr Darren Ennis said:
“Our game was probably best described as a friendly opening fixture rather than a grandmaster contest.
“Outdoor chess is such a simple idea, but it can make a real difference. It gives people a reason to stop, sit down, talk, think and enjoy being outside.
“Chess brings people together across different ages and backgrounds. Whether someone is a regular player or just wants to have a go, this table gives residents another free activity to enjoy at Burntwood Leisure Centre.
“It was great to meet the team from Concrete Sports, who did a fantastic job with the installation. They were a great bunch of lads and really took pride in the work.”
Cllr Laura Ennis added:
“We wanted to support something that residents could use for years to come.
“This is a small project, but it adds something positive to the leisure centre and creates another space where people can come together.
“Burntwood deserves good quality outdoor facilities, and this is another example of local councillor funding being used directly for the benefit of the community.”
