PLANS for new padel tennis courts in Shenstone have been approved.
The proposals will involve constructing the courts and clubhouse south of Dobbies Garden Centre on Birmingham Road.
A total of six courts are proposed, five of which will be enclosed for all weather play.
A small clubhouse with changing facilities will also be built for court users.
It is proposed that the facility will have 11 car parking spaces, including two accessible bays.
Access will be provided from the current road which serves the garden centre. The application has been supported by 54 residents.
However, three objections were received over noise and traffic concerns in the area.
The design and access statement submitted to the council states:
"The proposals seek to repurpose a section of underused car park at a well established garden centre.
"The existing use confirms the accessibility of the site, its ease of access and close location to both major roads and public transport ensures access for all.
"Its close location to Shenstone ensures it provides an additional sporting facility. However, the distance from neighbouring properties and close proximity to major roads reduces the environmental impact and amenity on the existing village of Shenstone."
The developers said that there was demonstrable unmet need for the use, and that the location is a sustainable one and therefore should be approved.
In a report planning officers agreed:
"The applicant has submitted evidence demonstrating a clear unmet need for indoor padel facilities within the district.
"The evidence identifies a requirement for approximately eight courts to meet current demand, with only three outdoor courts currently benefiting from planning permission.
"The proposal would therefore provide an important recreational facility addressing an identified shortfall in provision, delivering year round opportunities for participation in sport and associated health and wellbeing benefits."
