PLANS for a new memorial to Muslims who fought in both world wars have been approved.

The minaret-style column has been earmarked for a site near the Far East zone in the National Memorial Arboretum.

It would feature a 12-metre high central structure with a base with ceramic tiles highlighting places Muslim soldiers served during the First and Second World Wars.

A planning statement said:

“An important narrative for this memorial was that Muslim soldiers served Britain around the world.

“We think stone or ceramic maps could be deployed on either the horizontal ground surface, or on the vertical surfaces of the memorial.

“By noting key dates, battles and acts of valour people can be encouraged to research this subject further.

“Taking a cue from traditional Islamic architecture and also western classical architecture, the memorial design makes use of the interplay between square, octagonal and circular forms to give interest and articulation to the proposed column.”
