A teenage cyclist seriously injured in a Lichfield crash was forced to change his route to school because of a road closure, a friend has revealed.
The 16-year-old was flown to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after being involved in a crash with a white Vauxhall Vivaro taxi yesterday morning (December 2) on Burton Road in Streethay.
A friend, who did not want to be named, revealed that he had been forced to change his route because of works to replace a bridge over the West Coast Main Line.
“He usually goes across the railway and through Boley Park, but the road at the back of Trent Valley station has been closed so he had to go that way instead.
“I was really shocked when I heard about what happened.”
The accident is likely to raise fresh concerns about safety on the Burton Road after a pedestrian was killed two years ago just metres from the spot where the latest incident happened.
The busy road, which links the A38 to Lichfield from the north, only has a narrow footpath on one side of the road.
Police are now appealing for witnesses to yesterday’s crash. Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting incident 95 of December 2.
