THE role the Midlands played in the English Civil War will be explored at a talk in Lichfield.
Rik Sowden will lift the lid on a violent and transformative period in the nation’s history when he visits the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum at 7pm on 15th January.
A spokesperson said:
“During a war which affected everyone iand which spread across the world, the heaviest fighting and the heaviest load fell upon the disputed land in the middle.
“Birmingham, a firm centre of support for Parliament, and Coventry, famous as a place where captured Royalists were held, were surrounded by supporters for the King and dozens of garrisons were spread through what is now the West Midlands, while Lichfield changed hands on three occasions and Dudley Castle was a firm centre of Royal power.
“Rik will focus on events and characters which impacted on the Midlands during a period that casts a long shadow, the echoes of which can still be felt today.”
