Work is underway to bring an historic building in Lichfield back to life as a community facility.
The Lichfield Waterworks Trust has been working jointly with the owners the owners of the Sandfields Pumping Station, Persimmon Homes Ltd, Lichfield District Council and Lichfield City Council to secure the future of the Grade II* listed building.
They have now agreed the terms of a licence to enter the building to conduct a feasibility study, which will allow the group to put together a plan to preserver the Victorian waterworks.
The keys were handed over by the Lord Mayor of Lichfield, Sheelagh James, during a ceremony which also saw David Moore, chairman of the trust, describe the move as “a giant leap for the people of Lichfield”.
Built in 1854, the waterworks helped save people in the Black Country from the cholera epidemics that had wiped out thousands of lives.
A spokesperson for the trust said: “Sandfields Pumping Station is one of the region’s most exciting pieces of industrial heritage that played a significant part in the development of the industrial revolution.”
