Lichfield’s MP has urged those calling for HS2 in other parts of the country to consider the disruption the controversial line will cause in local communities.
Michael Fabricant made his comments in a House of Commons debate on the provision of high speed rail in Scotland.
He suggested to to the Minister for Scotland, Iain Stewart, that those wanting the route more quickly should consider the impact on Lichfield.
“With millions of tonnes of soil being moved across Lichfield, with roads being closed and the canal being obstructed in Lichfield due to HS2, perhaps we can help Scotland by giving them our bit of HS2?”

The Minister replied:
“I know my Honourable Friend is a doughty campaigner against HS2 – we have had that debate I’m afraid, but I’m always happy to discuss with him how we can optimise the building work.
“The Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, has heard his representations.
“I am an enormous believer in the potential of high-speed rail links to transform the economic potential of this country.”
