A SPORTS body has welcomed plans for new padel courts in Burntwood.
A planning application has been submitted to Lichfield District Council for the change of use of an industrial unit at Burntwood Business Park on Cinder Road.
The sport – described as a blend of tennis and squash – is seeing a surge in popularity across the world.
A planning statement submitted as part of the application showed proposals for the new Burntwood facility include seven indoor padel courts.
There are also pickleball courts, a wellness studio, cafe, shop and changing facilities planned.
The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) said in a supporting letter:
“The additional facilities will significantly enhance the development of the sport in the local area and provide further access to the local community.
“The current demand for the sport indicates that there is need for increased provision.
“Further to this, padel forms an integral part of the LTA’s plans to develop tennis within the area, including the recent funded court refurbishments at several park sites in the wider Staffordshire area.
“The additional playing hours created by the new facilities would allow an increased number of people from the local community to enjoy the game of padel in line with the LTA’s strategy.”
